clearfill New Pioneer 2004 - Frank Day clearfill

It was a “blue-ribbon day” for Boulder when Frank Day moved here in the 1970s! An entrepreneur extraordinaire, Frank arrived full of enthusiasm for our community and it has never ceased.

The son of a rancher in Westcliffe, Frank was born in Denver in 1932 and spent his early years in Colorado and the Chicago area. He graduated from Oak Park High School where he was an honor student and athlete. He received a B.A. in English Literature from Harvard University, graduating in 1954. Frank went on to attend the Harvard Graduate School of Business, receiving his M.B.A. in 1956. He is married to Gina Day and now resides in St. Croix , U.S. Virgin Islands, but maintains homes in both Boulder and Aspen, spending as much time in Colorado as possible. He has two children by a previous marriage, Steven and Philip, and two grandchildren, Jesse and Aaron.

Frank has been active for years in various community and charitable organizations. Most outstanding was his dedication to Downtown Boulder, Incorporated, a non-profit organization of property and business owners which he helped found and served as the first president; the Mary Sandoe House, an alternative care facility for the elderly; and the Peoples' Clinic. Ruth Correll, former mayor of Boulder and contributor to the Sandoe House has said, “The support he's given us is indicative to me of a man who realizes that this community has given him a great deal.” And, Frank acknowledges, “You're in a community. You make money. You should give something back whenever you have a chance. It's one big ball of wax.”

Currently, Frank is chairman of Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc., a privately held company with over one hundred restaurants nationwide, whose sales exceed $260,000,000 annually and employ more than 6,500 people. He is President of Concept Restaurants, Inc., also a privately held restaurant company with multiple operations in Colorado . He is Managing Partner of the historic Hotel Boulderado and President of Table Mountain Inn, Inc., another historic hotel, restaurant and banquet property in Golden. Over the years he has joined partners in numerous real estate developments and ventures in Colorado, Wyoming , Idaho and St. Croix.

Growing up on Lake Michigan, Frank became an avid sailor. Although replaced in Colorado by biking, Frank relaxes in the same focused manner he works in and is a strong competitor. He sees his role in business as a coach with a lot of people out there playing. “Anything I really get accomplished is done through and with other people,” Day has said. Always the strategist and idea man, Frank Day has contributed a great deal to the economic vitality and success of Boulder.
