Communication Arts

Born in New York City 1944, schooled in L.A. I always lock doors and see who else is on the street. Two brothers, two sisters. Peruvian, French, Mexican, Italian immigrant parents and grandparents. Si, puedo hablar Espanol e mi piace cebo Italiano. Father wore a tux almost every night for dinner. He worked at Chasen's in Beverly Hills . Both parents worked in the restaurant business. Grandpa Giacomo, worked construction – a blue collar clan. Giacomo taught me to love opera, science, beauty, and ideas based on philosophy rather than ideology - a literate form of streetwise.

Graduated, Honors Program, California State University at Long Beach in 1968. Hired by famous husband and wife design firm- The Office of Ray and Charles Eames (prior to that I thought they were brothers). Their world of curiosity, meaning and passion made history and they exited broke. I was a faithful and favorite serf for three years. Met delightful Henry Beer, the Art Center intern, there and we've been cohorts since.

Came to Boulder in 1971 at twenty seven years old as a consultant to Carl Worthington on the design of the Denver Tech Center . Enchanted by early morning scents of mountain pine on Pearl Street and a real community, I stayed. Leased Carl's basement on Spruce for a year. Moved to 1101 Pearl in 1972 where Boulder Bookstore is now. Joined Downtown “Businessmens” Association and changed it to Downtown “ Boulder ”. It took two years to get Henry here in 1973. Janet Martin came aboard, lucky for us, in 1977. Together with sixty incredibly creative people we've built a very unique firm of multi-disciplinary, integrated design services that range from the branding of Spyder Sportswear and StarTrek to the architectural design of Madison Square Garden and Downtown Boulder Mall or Walters and Hogsett. We create two and three dimensional, branded experiences based on ideas that emotionally connect. We help shape communities, set market expectations and deliver outcomes.

Communities thrive through participation. My involvements include board memberships on CU Artists' Series, Chautauqua Concert Association, Downtown Boulder Inc., CU Atlas Foundation, Colorado Chautauqua Association, Society of Environmental Graphic Designers, and the Downtown Boulder Mall Commission. I started the Boulder Farmers' Market in the mid 70's with David Bolduc.

My family life was made possible by meeting, falling in love and marrying Deborah Boston, a Montana native in 1991. We were honored with two joyful daughters, Meredith, 1991 and Olivia, 1994.
