Sights Once Seen,
Daguerreotyping Frémont's
Last Expedition through the Rockies

September 4 - December 23, 2003

Western explorer John Charles Frémont (1813-1890) was one of his generation's greatest hero. He was nearly one of photography's greatest heroes as well.

Frémont's last expedition across the Rockies in the winter of 1853-54 was the first in the history of western exploration to systematically photograph the magnificent terrain of the West using photography's first process, the daguerreotype; a direct-positive process, creating a highly detailed image on a sheet of copper plated with a thin coat of silver without the use of a negative.

This exhibit allowed visitors to marvel at daguerreotype photographer Robert Shlaer's recreation of the lost images and views seen by explorers a century and a half ago.
